Data Classification

Data Classification is based on the fact that different performance and service levels, protective measures, retention policies and recovery times are required as business information changes in value.
As “delete older than….” or “delete unattached longer than….” does not work under retention rules, the volume of data dramatically increases. Backup and recovery times are extended in proportion to their growth rate but often disproportionate to the information value.


Data classification involves first defining the relevant taxonomies (e.g. Regulation Compliance, Data Privacy, Availability, Recoverability and Retention) and within them, the incremental classes.


Classification is carried out together with the owner of the data, using templates and consolidating the information in a meaningful table as a prerequisite for a balanced storage strategy and for defining tiers, the needed capacities and functionalities and policies for moving data between tiers according to its changing business value. The resulting SLA model for storage leads to a transparent agreement on how to manage differentiated data storage with regards to functionalities and costs.
